LONDON, United Kingdom, November 7, 2022 – Minister of Tourism, Hon Edmund Bartlett is championing a global tourism resilience tip that could serve as a critical element in achieving sustainability in the industry. The tip would be a contribution by travellers who form part of the carbon footprints left when they vacation.
“The environment is the product and the sustainable building of capacity to manage the environment is to secure the product and ensure that there is tourism in the future. The issue of climate change is a critical one and impacts small island states that are heavily tourism dependent and susceptible to these types of disruptions.
It is therefore important that we protect the environment and a contribution by every traveller could ensure sustainable measures are put in place, so travel and tourism continue,” said Minister Bartlett.
Minister Bartlett made the announcement, as countries across the globe converge in Sharm El Sheikh in Egypt for the 2022 United Nations Climate Change Conference, more commonly referred to as Conference of the Parties of the UNFCCC, or COP27. The Minister also said that the global tourism resilience tip should be minimal and a shared cost among travellers so as not be a barrier.
“Disruptions like climatic events are inevitable and so we will need to be able to recover after they occur and a resilience tip would help to take the industry beyond sustainability into stronger recoveries, that will allow destinations to thrive after these disruptions,” added Minister Bartlett.
COP27 has been held annually since the first United Nations climate agreement in 1992 and is used by governments to agree on policies to limit global temperature rises and adapt to impacts associated with climate change. Being held from November 6-18, around 90 heads of state and representatives from more than 190 countries are expected to attend.
